India to consider legalising sports betting?

Published on September 7, 2010 by   ·   No Comments

Reports suggest the Indian government is considering legalising sports betting.

The highly respected Times of India claims that the Union government is taking a serious look at whether or not to bring sports betting under it’s control.

The idea is thought to have a number of advantages. Firstly, by having some regulation of betting on cricket there is the chance to try and limit the chance of “spot-betting” scandals which the Pakistan team are embroiled in.

The second is the potential for vast tax revenues which could be spent on either sports development or a million and one other projects.

The government is consdering modelling it’s plans on the 2005 UK Gambling Act. Plans though, appear to be at a very early stage. Although gambling is taboo in India, underground betting does take place.
